2nd Grade Mission Moon Challenge

3/21/2019

The students in Ms. McCay's 2nd grade class had the opportunity to participate in First Lego League Jr.'s Mission Moon Challenge.  The students worked throughout the school year to explore questions such as: What do you need to know about the Moon to live there? What will you eat and drink? How will you get energy? and more!  Using the Engineering Design Process, the students designed and built a Moon Base to hold the LEGO rocket ship and demonstrated how they would  solve problems related to living on the Moon.  The LEGO WeDO 2.0 was used to build and program the motorized parts.

Recently, each of the teams presented their solutions to their class.  Peer discussion and debate were utilized as the teams made claims and provided evidence to support.  Mr. Corey Cheeks, a WHAM parent and Exxon Mobil employee, volunteered with the students each week to provide this robotics experience.  Through a grant provided by Exxon Mobil and Mr. Cheeks' volunteerism, we were able to purchase the materials for this AMAZING experience!

Several members of the WHAM Science Lab Team and Dr. Legoria were recently interviewed by George Morris from the Advocate.  They discussed with him the impact of having pets in the classroom and the numerous real-world connections that are made.  All students in grades K-5 visit the  WHAM Science Lab each week where they receive hands-on standards based instruction, aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards.  Students in grades 3-5 have the opportunity to complete the Science Lab Helper application which includes an essay.  Parent permission is also a requirement.  All members of the team complete an orientation, where they learn about safety and the responsibility that comes along with the job.

A team of 4th and 5th grade WHAM students recently participated in Destination Imagination (DI), in Bossier City, LA.  DI is a kid-powered; team driven event where students explore STEAM concepts in a hands-on environment while encouraging teamwork and celebrating differences.   We are proud to announce that our students received the Renaissance Engineering Design Award for creating a hydraulic system arm model.   This event was the culmination of a season filled with hard work, preparation, and creativity.
