Westdale Heights Academic (WHAM) is proud to be one of the first nationally certified magnet schools. The Magnet School Standards of Excellence define the essential elements and characteristics of high-quality magnet programs. WHAM is proud to be a nationally certified magnet school based on these standards.
Every nationally certified magnet school, regardless of neighborhood or zip code, is held to the same high standards, meeting the five pillars of magnet schools as well as the Standards of Excellence. Nationally certified magnet schools like WHAM provide high-quality, innovative programs that promote choice, diversity and excellence.
Thank you to our school community of students, parents, staff, and stakeholders who help to make WHAM an AMAZING school where learning is truly MAGICAL!

Happy Pi Day!

3/14/2018

Yes that’s pi, not pie.  Today marks the 30th anniversary of the math-inspired holiday.

Pi, denoted by the Greek letter “π”, has been part of human knowledge for millennia, but it wasn’t until 1988 that physicist Larry Shaw organized what is now recognized as the first “Pi Day” celebration at the San Francisco Exploratorium science museum. Shaw chose March 14, or 3.14 — the first three digits of pi — as Pi Day. Shaw died last year, but Pi Day is still celebrated by lovers of mathematics around the world.

Today the WHAM 5th grade students learned how to apply the circumference formula to find the radius, diameter, or the circumference of of a circle all  while enjoying a little pie.  Happy Pi Day!

Several WHAM students participated in the first ever Girls Night at the LSU Museum of Natural Science. These students had an opportunity to spend an evening exploring the museum collections, enjoying fun hands-on science activities, snacking and chatting with women scientists, and learning more about the women leading some of the university’s most exciting science adventures. There was even a session for parents.  We had an AMAZING time!

WHAM Pollination Celebration Family STEAM Night

3/14/2018

Over 250 WHAM students and their families learned about the important job of native pollinators and ways to attract them to their yards at the WHAM Pollination Celebration Family STEAM Night. Moving at their own pace and guided by their passports, families traveled through the school participating in a dozen pollinator-themed activities.

To better understand how pollinators and flowers work together, students Engineered Pollinators from chenille stems and pompoms that could gather pollen from unusual flowers like the Bucket Orchid or the Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Collecting pollen became “hands-on” as students dug through Cheetos to reach a sweet treat at the Pollinating Cheetos Station. The Pollination Relay had students running pollen from flower to flower and returning to their hives with nectar. Other activities included Still Life Butterflies Drawing and Pollination Grid.

The Science Lab was buzzing as WHAM families learned about honeybee colonies. Honeybee enthusiast, Laverne Simoneaux, explained the roles of the three types of bees (queen, worker, drone) as students found each in a honeybee observation hive.

At the end of the night families fluttered home with a new appreciation for pollinators and plants to start their very own pollinator gardens.

The WHAM Brownie troop did an excellent job leading the EBR Metro Council in the Pledge of Allegiance to begin the February 28th council meeting. During their visit, Mayor President Sharon Weston-Broome was so gracious with our girls.  She took time to meet each young lady and asked many wonderful questions. They represented WHAM well!
